China’s third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has successfully completed its first trials using an electromagnetic catapult system for launching and recovering fighter jets. The carrier, which is the first Chinese vessel equipped with this technology, conducted take-offs and arrested landings for aircraft including the J-15T, J-35, and KongJing-600. Weighing over 80,000 tonnes, the Fujian can carry fighter jets, early warning aircraft, anti-submarine planes, and drones.

It has undergone more than 100 days of sea trials since its launch last year and is expected to be commissioned later this year, enabling China to operate three carrier groups. The deployment of the Fujian in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea has raised international attention due to regional territorial claims. China’s naval expansion now includes plans for four to five carriers, including a potential nuclear-powered vessel, reflecting its aim to extend its operational reach in areas like the South China Sea, Taiwan Strait, and Indian Ocean. The development coincides with China’s ongoing fighter aircraft projects capable of operating from these carriers.
