India has strongly defended its decision to continue importing oil from Russia despite criticism from the United States and the European Union. Responding to public remarks made by Western leaders, India clarified that its increased purchases of Russian crude only began after traditional suppliers diverted their oil exports to Europe following the Ukraine war. India also highlighted that, in 2022, the U.S. itself had encouraged it to buy Russian oil to help stabilize global energy markets during a period of extreme price volatility. Officials stressed that these imports are essential to provide affordable fuel for India’s 1.4 billion people and to support the country’s growing economy. India further accused Western nations of hypocrisy, pointing out that the U.S. and EU countries continue trading with Russia in energy, chemicals, and minerals while publicly criticizing India for similar actions. Calling the criticism “unfair and hypocritical,” India reaffirmed that it will always act in its national interest and will not be pressured by any country to change its energy policies. It asserted that no external power can dictate its choices, particularly when those decisions are vital for the economy and the well-being of its people.
