U.S. President Donald Trump is supporting a plan by Texas Republicans to change the state’s voting maps before the 2026 elections. The goal is to give Republicans more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. To stop this, more than 50 Texas Democrats left the state on August 3, traveling to cities like Chicago, New York, and Boston. By leaving, they are trying to block the vote from happening in the Texas Capitol.
In response, Texas Republicans have issued arrest warrants to bring them back. Trump said the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI) might need to help with this. Governor Greg Abbott is also trying to remove some of the missing Democrats from their positions. Now, Democratic leaders in other states, such as California and New York, are warning they might change their own voting maps in response. This fight in Texas is turning into a bigger national battle about who controls elections and political power in the U.S.
