Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for her relentless struggle to restore democracy, uphold human rights, and challenge the authoritarian rule of President Nicolás Maduro. The Nobel Committee praised her “unwavering courage in defending freedom and democratic values amid persecution.”

In a surprise move, Machado dedicated the award to U.S. President Donald Trump, acknowledging his “decisive support” for Venezuela’s democratic movement. Her remarks immediately sparked international debate and a storm of reactions online. While many lauded her gesture as a diplomatic acknowledgment, others viewed it as politicizing a global peace honor. Trump quickly responded, claiming Machado “called to thank him” and suggested he “deserved the Nobel” himself, reigniting his long-standing frustration over being overlooked for the prize. The internet erupted in mockery, flooding social media with memes and sarcastic posts captioned “I want my Nobel.”

Meanwhile, the White House criticized the Nobel Committee, arguing that the decision reflected “politics over peace,” hinting at growing polarization even within U.S. circles. Despite the uproar, Machado’s win is seen as a symbol of democratic resilience in Latin America, highlighting the global importance of Venezuela’s struggle for freedom and transparent governance.
