The second state visit to the UK by Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is set for Wednesday and Thursday and will feature a large amount of pageantry but comes with overwhelming risk. It is very unusual for a non-royal to receive a state visit twice, showing some of Britain’s desire to build relations and that there are still controversies regarding Trump. Windsor Castle has become a “ring of steel,” a tribute to the involvement of 1,300 troops and 120 horses for the state welcome. The seating at the banquet, the menu and the King’s seven-minute speech are all planned to avoid a political issue. Behind the pomp, key goals include securing exemptions for UK steel and aluminium from US tariffs, new nuclear cooperation, and a major tech partnership with Silicon Valley. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also aims to influence Trump’s stance on Ukraine and Russia.

However, the pitfalls are evident. Lord Mandelson’s dismissal from his post as UK ambassador because of his ties to Epstein could overshadow the discussions. Policy differences exist and deepen regarding NATO, China, and especially the Middle East, where the UK is set to recognize Palestinian statehood.

With protests expected, this visit is a costly gamble for Britain’s economy, diplomacy, and global reputation.
