New Delhi: As the Russia–Ukraine war grinds on, America’s latest overture to Kyiv raises a critical question: is Washington primarily offering protection, or also striking one of the most lucrative defense deals of the decade?

At a high-profile summit this week, President Trump pledged written security guarantees for Ukraine within days, promising long-term American backing. Yet the assurances come alongside a staggering $100 billion Ukrainian proposal to purchase U.S. weaponry, largely financed by European allies, and a $50 billion joint drone production agreement with American defense firms. Analysts note that this blend of defense commitments and industrial contracts is unprecedented, weaving military strategy with commercial gain.

Supporters argue that such arrangements will strengthen Ukraine’s resilience, modernize its defense sector, and cement transatlantic unity. Critics, however, caution that the framework blurs the line between genuine security guarantees and profitable geopolitics suggesting America’s role may be as much about economic opportunity as safeguarding sovereignty.

As the documents are finalized, the world watches to see whether Washington emerges as Ukraine’s steadfast shield or its most powerful arms supplier under the guise of protection.
