The Russia downplayed Donald Trump’s order to move U.S. submarines within striking distance of Russia, calling it routine and warned against nuclear rhetoric. Trump ordered the submarines to be repositioned following a cable from ex-Russian President Medvedev, and following an order where Trump warned sanctions if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by August 8. As tensions rise, Moscow welcomed the preplanned visit of U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia as a sign of continuing engagement. Meanwhile, deadly Russian strikes hit southern Ukraine while Kyiv continues to strike at military targets in Crimea using drone operations. Peace has remained elusive for both sides of entrenched positions.
