At the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the “dragon and elephant” i.e. China and India should come together instead of staying divided. This shows China’s interest in improving ties with India, even after years of problems like border clashes, trade disputes, and regional competition.

For India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit is about careful engagement. India is still cautious about China’s moves, especially projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through disputed areas. But PM Modi also knows that India and China need to talk and work together on some issues such as trade, counterterrorism, and regional peace. His approach is practical, cooperative when it helps India, but stays firm on sovereignty. This visit also comes at a time when the U.S. has raised tariffs on Indian goods, putting pressure on India’s economy. By joining the SCO discussions, India is keeping more choices open, stopping China and Russia from fully controlling the group, and making sure it stays important in Eurasia. This careful balance could shape Asia’s politics in the future.
